How to Fix DNS Propagation Issues Quickly
When you update DNS records, it can take hours (sometimes up to 48) before the changes reach the entire internet. This delay is called DNS propagation. Here’s how to handle it and minimise downtime.
1. Be Patient
DNS changes must spread across thousands of servers worldwide. This naturally takes time.
2. Lower TTL Settings
Set a low TTL (Time to Live) before making changes. This makes resolvers refresh more quickly. See our DNS record guide for details.
3. Clear Local Cache
Flush DNS on your computer (ipconfig /flushdns on Windows, dscacheutil -flushcache on macOS) or clear browser cache.
4. Use Online Tools
Check propagation progress with global DNS checkers like whatsmydns.net.
5. Avoid Frequent Changes
Every update restarts the propagation cycle. Plan changes carefully to reduce delays.
Next Steps
If email isn’t working after DNS updates, check your MX records and verify SPF, DKIM, and DMARC.
